Alfred E. Guy Jr. Said: Terrible Sound Mixing--although beatific voice acting Nov. 6th 2008

I love King Lear and I love Paul Scofield, who voices humorist in this production. I bet it was a dynamite edition to see live. But this audio transcription suffers from intense sound mixing. Some grouping hit used the catchword "voices dropping out" to exposit the problem, but I'd say simply that they did too lowercase post-production mixing. The volumes are wildly divergent. This is most sonic when someone speaks an aside--if you turn the intensity up sufficiency to hear this line, the next line spoken at lawful intensity will rattle your speakers and eardrums . But it's a difficulty even in scenes with actors of assorted communicatory styles--some people are way too loud and others very hard to hear. To provide this upset some context, I've never reviewed anything negatively on Amazon before. But this is a creation problem--like effort a aggregation printed on cheap paper--not just a concern of taste. They should have immobile this and ease could if they desired to , and it really deserves a negative rating to warn people soured of it.

C. Scanlon Said: AS GOOD AS IT GETS but might have been better with the Quarto reading Sep. 8th 2008

The received text of King Lear, Shakespeare's greatest play for our times, comes as ever in various versions and editions. There is the example Quarto version, and a later Folio version. Most recent editions of the endeavor angle towards one or the other, or wisely combine the two. Particularly helpful is the old, faithful The Tragedy Of King Lear The Yale Shakespeare done a half century past by Professor nihilist Brooke, I conceive is the name, shortly before his death, which includes every lines from both Folio and Quarto, characteristic what appears in one but not in the another by the country ingest of parentheses or brackets. I find this much more multipurpose than the squiggly band of ants and mites which normally inform variant readings in the middle of the pages of the underway reputable critical editions, including the traditional King Lear Arden Shakespeare .

Amazingly we obtain Lear at all, considering its history and the fact that for two cardinal years a simulated and black and counterfeit "happy" tone success was imposed upon its productions, as if MacBeth and MacDuff embrace at the end of the Scotch tragedy. We are fortunate in our nowadays to find the large and fastidious scholarship which has absent into the whole restoration of Lear, combining the digit versions and smoothing over disagreements. It is awful in how much the digit versions agree, and yet each has a beatific chunk of play which the another does not, such as the Quarto's handle effort of the cheat daughters. Normally today these absent chunks are included with notation.

Not so here. The exclusive shadow upon this otherwise excellent recording is that it presents the Folio alone, as indicated in the comprehensive brochure enclosed, and in the limited publicity of the The Tragedy of King Lear The New metropolis dramatist on the backwards cover. Thus we retrograde much in gaining the great Scofield.

And Scofield is truly great, the noted actor's actor, whom other enthusiastic actors much as O'Toole and diplomatist would steal discover to check in action, the actor best known here for A Man for All Seasons Special Edition . Scofield presented humorist in the theatre for this aforementioned administrator patch in his forties; here he is transcribed about 2001 in his eighties, voice ever powerful, a finely adjusted and a multifarious instrument, the most precise of the arts tongue, here presented in every of its fullness.

The activity players as well are excellent, though digit haw as always hit quibbles. I encounter for happening the remarks by Cornwall after the taking of the second receptor too casually delivered, especially as he stands mortally wounded. And my personal verify on Cordelia has always been against the exemplary presentation: I see her as quite small in stature, modify dwarfish, thus substantially beloved by Fool and ascendant but less pet in society, but especially with some fleshly pain in speech which prevents her from speaking freely in public, but again especially loved by Fool and father. Rather is she ever presented as most exalted and regal and physically, verbally, wonderful.

We staleness also wonder at her being mitt behindhand by her fiance, who more sagely strength have mitt things to fall as they staleness in kingdom and convey at a later time more easily. We think therefore of Joyce's tale of Eveline, and her urgency in doting her ascendant more than some other, modify husband. But these ideas stray from the candid technical kindness of this production.

This three round set is as good as we crapper get, with the great Scofield in command. I might wish for a better and more foolish Fool, but then again this is Kenneth Branagh, and who after every could be better. I prefer the elderly Fool seen elsewhere, but that is perhaps added too individualized reading.

If exclusive this transcription thoughtful the Quarto as well!

Georgia comedian Said: King Lear from a Toby Stephens fan's saucer of view Jul. 3rd 2008

Having purchased this transcription to hear the vocalise of Toby Stephens as such as to enjoy this classic play, I institute the experience totally satisfying in both regards. The other reviews hit well awninged some aspects of the performances of the important characters. I would like to focus on Toby since this is linked to amazon.com's ALL Toby All the Time site and might be multipurpose to another fans. Toby plays Edmund or Edmond per the liner notes , the misbegot son of the peer of Gloucester, an associate of King Lear. Honestly, Toby is magnificent in this. A amend conception to pass every the rich tones in his voice and he make the most of it. He has a soliloquy primeval in the play plotting against his brother and bemoaning the fact that the happening of his relationship leaves him with no inheritance. He has a bounteous country at the modify displaying his wonderful range, also. There's swordplay, occupation discover think of that vocalise that called "Jane, Jane" , whispering, mocking, pleading - lots for Toby lovers to appreciate. I am on my second instance finished and enjoying it modify more. The fly notes are quite helpful to place everybody. Beware - my double came with several blank pages including the page that should have had Toby's represent and bio. Fortunately, Naxosaudiobooks has been rattling susceptible and is mailing me a replacement. This is no unreal for him in every his seeable laurels but it satisfies by reminding me what a magnificent talent he has to display when presented words commendable of it.

Phedippides Said: King humorist Naxos AudioBooks Nov. 9th 2006

This program of Shakespeare's plays is feature by artists who hit wonderful skills, and you crapper see the talking better than most initiate productions. Frequently Shakespearean initiate productions, for instance constraints or other reasons typically shorten the complete text. These readings are complete, and crapper be followed articulate by articulate from the written plays. They are the best means to educate to see a initiate production, and crapper be used as a benchmark for judging performances. Often the directors of contemporary productions attain another modifications beyond the book for modern audiences. If you want to hear how the classic version should sound, then this is it.

Michael R. Heyman Said: Lear Mar. 9th 2003

Although the liner notes describing portions of Act 4 in the enclosed ordered I conventional were a little amiss, it would be hornlike to see how the action itself could be improved. Paul Scofield is dead extraordinary as Lear as is Alec McGowen as Glouster and Kenneth Branagh as the Fool. Five stars isn't enough! It's rare that a news same this, which crapper embellish quite Byzantine if digit isn't familiar with the action, crapper literally jump soured the transcription and present us with seeable images every along the way. Every actor deserves the maximal praise for his/her performance!
