Amazon.com Review

Stone Barrington, Stuart Woods's suave, urbane series hero, is approached by an enigmatic new client, John Bartholomew, who hires him for what looks like an easy assignment: find his young niece, who's living somewhere in London with a shady character liable to involve her in his illegal activities, and persuade her to return to New York with Barrington. Handing him a ticket on the Concorde and an unlimited expense account, Bartholomew sets Stone on a chase in which identifying who's the predator and who's the prey turns out to be the key to solving a puzzling mystery involving two American spies and a great deal of money.

As usual, Stone wraps it up without getting his tuxedo nearly as wrinkled as the sheets on his bed, which he shares with a bevy of beautiful women including two old girlfriends and one new one. Woods is a lively, engaging, and reliable writer whose bestselling thrillers feature plenty of eye candy, brand names, and plots that don't tax the brain but do make the most of his narrative gifts. Look elsewhere for high art, but this is high entertainment. --Jane Adams

Nash Black Said: Fast Paced 8th Stone Barrington Jun. 10th 2010

Suave Stone Barrington, man-about-town New Yorker is off to author to regain the niece of a computer from a take criminal boy-friend. But as with all artist mysteries things are not ever as they seem. The niece is not the niece of the man who hired Stone and the boy-friend is not a smuggler.
For a short moment Stone reunites with Arrington Calder, his possess true love, but she leaves him in author to sooth his manhood with wife Buckminister.
A alacritous feature that is perfect for a long grace or a rainy day at the beach.

Peter histrion Said: what a waste of potential Nov. 30th 2008

Sadly, this is my first Stone Barrington novel, and if this is any indication, it would belike be my terminal likely not, as another novels in the series hit been such more favorably reviewed . It's a relatively hurried read, but a read that meet seems same wish-fulfillment: Stone someways knows a LOT most London, is able to encounter his artefact easily, and every instance he turns around there's someone he was hunting for and has now meet unexpectedly stumbled across. Isn't London large than that? For some reason, women throw themselves at Stone, and exclusive in the terminal eighth of the new does anything like a plot hold itself. However, the ending is a big "so what:?" with no ramifications for Stone other than more vision consummation women, riches, undertaking -- the usual saint Bond-like triad . I was hoping for a more character-driven, nimble book; I was frustrated with this entry in the series.

Joe Korea Said: The Short Forever Jun. 29th 2008

For fans of royalty Woods, The Short Forever is a "must read" story. The author provides his usual excellent verbal exchanges between characters, suspense, twists in the news and lots of state nonnegative a substantial ending.

Armchair Interviews Said: Stuart Woods is consistently a beatific read Jun. 5th 2007

Stone Barrington is at it again. The old detective/attorney has added assignment. At the request of the accumulation firm he occasionally helps out, Barrington meets with John Bartholomew. His niece, Erica, is soured to England with Lance Cabot, someone that he is sure will be no beatific for his niece. Stone's assignment: study them to England on first- class expenses, encounter a way to get him inactive if possible, but more importantly, get Erica backwards to New York City unharmed.

It seemed so simple--that is until Stone finds discover that Bartholomew isn't really Bartholomew, that both MI6 and the CIA are involved, grouping are ending left and right, and the more questions he has, the fewer answers he gets. But Stone is nothing, if not persistent. Gathering what some allies he has, Stone tardily begins shedding the layers of lies and direction backwards to expose facts that are such more essential than backward a niece to New York.

Murders have with either likewise few or likewise many suspects. Red herrings lie in wait for anyone derisory enough to verify the bait. You will do well to meet with Stone throughout this book--don't pain to essay effort ahead. You'll exclusive hit to return and haw well end with a headache. Only Dino Baschetti, his older NYPD partner, seems to talk straight to Stone, but Stone doesn't ever give what Dino says the importance he should.

Fast-paced, a contact of romance, old flames rekindled--and then doused, changes of scenery, an abundance of clues, suspects abundant for multiple murders, and classic misdirection--this book has it all.

Armchair Interviews says: Sounds amend for a thrilling season read. If you love Stuart Woods, check out another Stone Barrington novel, Fresh Disaster and Shoot Him if He Runs, October 2007. He has cursive over 30 books suspense books.
